Big week in the world of professional golf. While a lot of top players were in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event, other pros were in the field at the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour. Here are this week’s Quick Hits.
The TaylorMade Show Featuring Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm
Man, if you watched the Match Play at all, Dustin and Jon Rahm didn’t even look like they were trying or playing in a professional golf tournament with the top players in the world. It was more like they were playing the local par-3 course by my house and didn’t give a single… Anyway, I love watching these two guys play when they’re on their game. What’s even better? Watching these two play against each other for the WGC Match Play Championship…
Johnson and Rahm Cruise to Final – Johnson Wins
Using his prodigious power off the tee with his ’17 M1 driver and brilliant putting with his Spider Tour putter, Johnson becomes first player to win each of the four WGC events. -TaylorMade Golf
Seems like all DJ needs to do to win is show up and swing clubs around. This guy is a monster.
Rahm went on a tear to make up a 5-down deficit but ultimately fell to Johnson who needed the full 18 holes to win 1 up. Pretty impressive golf from both of these guys.
Jason Day Withdraws From Match Play to be with Sick Mother
Jason Day is well-liked on Tour but has been somewhat of an enigma due to ongoing random health issues. Well there was a little clarity this past week when Jason Day removed himself from the WGC match play tournament only six holes into his first match. At a press conference shortly after, Day tearfully explained his mother had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and only 12 months to live. Like everyone else, we wish Jason and his family all the best as his mother begins her treatment in the United States.
Read our post on the withdrawal here.
Jason Day’s Mother Has Successful Surgery
Following the news of Day’s withdrawals and his mother’s recent cancer diagnosis, the golf world was happy to learn Saturday that her Friday surgery was successful and “doctors are optimistic about her recovery.”
Brandt Snedeker Break His Putter
Brandt Snedeker is well known for his old $15 driver he used to use and his trashed old school Odyssey Rossie he’s played forever. Well, in a weird turn of events, his putter head came loose from the shaft and Brandt ended up heading to a local Golf Galaxy to cruise the used racks. Even with everything at their disposal, the best players in the world still have some of the same struggles we all do!
Check out more of the story here.
I first saw this over at Barstool Sports. Here’s all I’m going to say…see, I’m not that bad of a golfer, I could be pro too. I could have DEFINITELY done that out there.
Lydia Ko Misses Second Career Cut
Heading over to the LPGA Tour, it’s worth noting that phenom, Lydia Ko, missed her second career cut. I find her career arc thus far totally fascinating between her rise to the top at such an early age, odd firings and contract changes, etc. Anyway, even the best have bad weeks.
D.A. Points Wins in Puerto Rico…Bryson Doesn’t
Not to detract from D.A. Points’s (I had an English teacher tell me that’s correct before) important PGA Tour Card securing victory, but I was nervous with Bryson flirting with the top of the leaderboard. Thankfully, the hero and former Bill Murrary Pro-Am partner, D.A. Points, made sure that didn’t happen. Sadly, the best golfer of the 21st century, Beef, did not win although still finished high on the board. See you soon, Beef. Hit me up if you’re in town and want to pound some curly fries and a Max Roast Beef.
